What Does ‘Age In Place’ Mean?

Posted on 02 Jan 2014 by Caregivers of America and has 0 Comment

Age in Place is the term used to describe the wish or ability of an elderly person to live in his or her own home and community independently and safely irrespective of their ability, health, age or wealth.

Age in Place (or ‘Aging in Place’) is about providing choice to elderly people who want to live at home – a trend that is increasing.

As we age, we have various challenges to overcome and to live with, whether they come from failing health, low income, loss of a partner or companion or something else.  Many of us — or our loved ones — prefer to live at home rather than go into one. It helps to learn about what we need as we age and consider things like mobility, adaptations to the house, how close family members live, nearby shops and amenities, health care provision and other factors.

Most homes are not designed for elderly people. Many of us will stay in the homes where we moved in with our partner and raised a family. Sometimes it is necessary to consider remodeling the interior and exterior of the house to make it fit for living independently in as we get older. Many people want to live on single ground floor property so that there are no stairs to climb. There are aids available to help negotiate stairs in such situations. Ramps may be worth considering for entry doors or subtle changes in level. Other adaptations may be required to help an elderly person cook, clean and wash. Thinking about things like storage spaces and making shelves and cupboards accessible may be a consideration. Changing a bathroom into a wet room may be useful to allow an elderly person to bathe safely.

Take time to discuss with family. Discussing requirements with family members and care givers may be useful so that an elderly relative is involved and aware of his or her limitations and can seek guidance on what can be changed in the home to make it possible to live comfortably and safely while aging in place.
